The Lived Experiences of Western Counselors Treating Indigenous Clients

Speaker: Silvia Daeumichen  Lay Leader: Jill Gates Music: Marsha Sousa
Join us as Silvia shares highlights from her master’s thesis defense exploring the experiences of Western-trained counselors serving predominately Alaska Native clients. Drawing on qualitative interviews with counselors across Alaska, she introduces Bhabha’s Third Space as culturally responsive framework for fostering collaboration, cultural humility, and shared meaning in counseling. Influenced by the work of indigenous psychologist Joseph Gone, this model seeds to decolonize Western counseling practices by honoring indigenous ways of knowing and supporting more effective, respectful, therapeutic relationships.
