This Sunday’s service has been cancelled this coming Sunday due to forecasted extreme cold temperatures.
At this time, the Fellowship does not have a formal cold weather policy that applies to Sunday worship services. In the absence of a fellowship-wide policy, we are referencing the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fairbanks Religious Education Cold Weather Policy (adopted January 2009) to guide our decision-making.
That policy states that when the temperature is –30°F or colder at 9:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, as reported by the official Fairbanks Time & Temperature, Religious Education and Day Care are not provided, and volunteers and staff are not expected to perform their duties. Based on current forecasts, we anticipate temperatures meeting this threshold and are sharing this decision now so everyone has ample notice.
Out of an abundance of care for safety and well-being—and consistent with the spirit and intent of this policy—Sunday service will not be held. If you know of any of our members who are unlikely to see this message, please call them to share the news, as we hope to avoid or at least minimize people showing up on Sunday.
We know how meaningful gathering together is, and this decision is never made lightly. In these conditions, safety must come first for our members, volunteers, staff, and families.
As we move through this period of extreme cold, we encourage you to reach out if you need assistance of any kind, and to check in on friends, family members, neighbors, or others who may be more vulnerable during these temperatures. Staying connected and looking out for one another is one of the ways we live our values, even when we cannot be together in person.
Please stay warm, take good care, and we look forward to being together again very soon.
