This March, UUFF is hosting a visiting minister. The Rev. Gordon D. Gibson and his wife Judy first visited Fairbanks as part of a Whale Coast tour several years ago. We’ve invited them back to experience Interior Alaska in winter. Gordon will give sermons on back-to-back Sundays (March 8 and 15). We’ve planned a Soup Sunday for March 8, after the service, so people can meet Gordon and Judy, but they will also be participating in several other Fellowship activities while in town, including Saturday Chatter on March 7 and the Hungry Book Club on March 13. A dinner with members of the Board is in the plans as well.
Gordon has served Unitarian Universalist congregations in Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Indiana. Gordon participated in the Selma voting rights campaign of 1965 and later served as a UU minister in Mississippi from 1969-84 and an investigator for the federal Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. He has spent years collecting stories of small acts of great courage which he will share with us on March 8. Last summer he witnessed such acts when the church he now belongs to in Knoxville, Tennessee, was attacked by a man with a shotgun.

During sabbaticals from the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship he has researched the 18th century feminist and Universalist Judith Sargent Murray (wife of John Murray, the founding father of Universalism in America). Judith was the first published American feminist author with a 1790 essay “On the Equality of the Sexes.” In 1984, Gordon discovered 20 blank books that Judith had filled with her writing and copies of her correspondence. He will discuss this important find and share stories about Judith Sargent Murray in his sermon on March 15. Gordon is the current president of the Unitarian Universalist Historical Society.

Gordon and Judy have two adult daughters, the elder a journalist in Muncie, Indiana, and the younger an attorney in San Francisco, California. The Gibsons have three grandchildren. The Gibsons currently live in Knoxville, Tennessee.
