Join us Friday night at 7 p.m. for Larry Merculieff’s presentation, “Voices of the Aleut Elders for Modern Times/Unungan Ulaazaaz Tunnu Uyam.” Aleut and other Alaska Native elders carry a deep wisdom about life and Creation from oral histories and life experiences that are sometimes referred to as the “Original Instructions” and “Natural Laws” given to human beings to guide us on how to live in harmony with the Earth and all her creatures. Larry will talk about Elder wisdom as it applies to modern day challenges of Climate Change and human-caused destruction of the planet. This event is sponsored by the UUFF Green Sanctuary Team as part of its Environmental Justice efforts to broaden our knowledge and connection to Climate Change and its impacts to human and other species. We hope you’ll join us in the sanctuary for Larry’s powerful talk.

Comment on this post to offer or request a ride to the November 1 service. The first Sunday of each month is Lo Carbon Sunday. As part of our of ongoing Green Sanctuary program we encourage those who can to ride a bike or car pool to the service in order to reduce our use of non-renewable resources. You could also choose to meet in a central location and car pool from there. Use the Comments link below to participate. If you can’t participate this week, but would like to rideshare in future, add your marker to the UUFF Ridesharing Map.( The map is especially great for standing offers.)

Green Sanctuary resumes. That’s re-zooms, not reh-zoo-mays, in case you were wondering. With the upcoming world-wide attention on October 24th, 350 Day (see www.350.org), it reminds us that we have no time to waste. The Green Sanctuary Committee will reconvene for their first meeting of the season on Thursday, October 29th, at Gulliver’s Second Story Cafe back room at 11:30 AM. We welcome new, interested planet-lovers to join us for a strategy-storming session on how to kick-off our UUFF efforts this winter. Don’t forget that Thursdays are famed Hungarian mushroom soup days at Gullivers — what more reason do you need to join us.

We have lots of information to work from, including the UUFF member survey and lots of ideas and momentum for worthwhile projects. We even have a fundraising idea. Come join us and add your ideas to the mix – we seek creative energy to help shape our UUFF Green future. We have 4 committee members and would like a couple more to join us. Questions? Contact Susan Grace Stoltz, Suzanne Osborn, Anna Plager, or Laenne Thompson.

Imagine for a moment a religious community that has a fundamental, bottom-line commitment to living in harmony with the Earth. What would it look like? How can we embody our seventh principle – respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part – in our daily practice at home, school, work, in our UUFF lives and in our broader community? We will be joining the growing movement of more than 85 UU congregations across the country who are certified by UUA as a Green Sanctuary. Anna Plager will lead a discussion of what’s involved in becoming a Green Sanctuary.
We will start with a review of our current personal practices, based on your responses to the survey posted online prior to the service. The Green Sanctuary Program encourages individual actions to reduce our impact on this planet, but primarily it is a program of congregational action. It is about working together to strengthen our ability to create environmental change. We will build Green Teams to embark on year-long projects that will build better stewardship of Earth’s resources. Our goal is to create a realistic vision for our future activities in four focus areas: Worship and Celebration; Religious Education; Sustainable Living; and Environmental Justice. The service will be interactive – your participation will help guide our path to a greener future. Speaker, Anna Plager. Lay leader, Peg Bowers. Accompanist, Susan Grace.
