Please join us for a fall Work Party – Saturday, September 4, from 1 – 5 pm! This is all part of the Green Sanctuary project list that you reviewed and supported last February and March. These projects will create better outdoor spaces for the fellowship to enjoy:

STAIRS from the Sanctuary landing down to the parking area and play yard

3 TERRACES below the west window for perennials;

RECYCLE BIN to collect our recyclables;

WALKWAY to the labyrinth from the driveway;

TREE, SHRUB, & FLOWER bed mulch around plantings

Bring your work gloves, and your good spirit ready to work and have fun working together! The projects with at least 2 or 3 people to help will get done and the rest will have to wait for another season. Come join us if you are around Labor day weekend, we can use all hands to accomplish these jobs and improve our outdoor surroundings!

The bad news is that Libby’s September 11 book signing event in Fairbanks has been cancelled, so we are rescheduling her concert for later this fall, probably October or November. The good news is that we may be able to get her for both a Saturday night concert and a Sunday morning service, with a book signing afterward. We are also looking for a date that has fewer conflicts with events involving both UUs and PFLAG members (the concert will be a benefit for both our organizations). If you would like to help with this event, please contact us or speak with Brian Rogers or Jana Peirce.

This Sunday: The death of Muhammad sparked a schism in Islam between Sunni and Shia that has lasted for over 1350 years, and defined many of the divisions within Islam today. Islamic history is defined by various revival movements of these two great divisions in Islam, and the theological, philosophical and political tensions between the two groups. Many Shia point to the Iranian Islamic Revolution as a touchstone for a modern Shia Revival, which affects not only the Shia, but also the Sunni and non-Islamic people of the world. This program will attempt to provide historical and philosophical context to the modern Shia Revival and our understanding of its effect on us. Speaker: Mike Walleri. Lay Leader: TBA; Accompanist: Laurel Holmes.

What is our energy future? What role can we play as ratepayers? We have special needs because of our extreme climate, we’re on the front lines of climate change, and we need energy to be affordable to everyone. Alaska is at an energy crossroads. We have the option of staying with the past, relying heavily on fossil fuels, or being innovative leaders who are ready to transition to a sustainable energy future. Get a bigger picture of our energy landscape: Where have we been? Where are we headed? What options do we have? And how can we make a difference when it comes to climate change?
The first Sunday of each month is Lo Carbon Sunday. You could also choose to meet in a central location and car pool from there. Use the Comments link below to participate. If you can’t participate this week, but would like to rideshare in future, add your marker to the UUFF Ridesharing Map.
