Alaskan Friends of Chukotka
>
Mission statement
As Chukotka moves toward a modern democratic society with the goal of uplifting the social, economic, and spiritual welfare of its people and ensuring the survival of the indigenous cultures, Alaskan Friends of Chukotka, a regional NGO, seeks to be of assistance as one neighbor to another. In so doing AFOC recognizes that the welfare of Alaska and its people is intimately tied with that of Chukotka and that benefits to one will be benefits to the other.
Objectives:
-AFOC does not propose to give answers but
to be useful in this process in any way that benefits both regions. Currently
this includes emergency aid to Chukotkan families and organizations, which is
seen as a important temporary need.
-AFOC wishes to play a useful part of the building of democratic self-sustaining
and empowered communities in the same way that we desire this for Alaska, but
respecting cultural differences that may exist. In tying emergency aid to long
term development we work to supply material aid that will encourage the Chukotkans
to provide for themselves as they wish to do.
-AFOC also encourages the development of friendships and long term connections
between Alaskans and Chukotkans. For that reason we mainly assist through direct
family and small group contacts using a very limited, volunteer administrative
structure, mainly with Alaskan support, but including other Americans.
-As a non-sectarian group, AFOC is willing to be of help to any other
organization, religious or otherwise, which has the same neighborly and empowering
democratic goals in its work with Chukotka.
