Drawing on Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation and Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, director Robert Kenner’s documentary explores the food industry’s detrimental effects on our health and environment. Kenner spotlights the men and women who are working to reform an industry rife with monopolies, questionable interpretations of laws and subsidies, political ties and rising rates of E. coli outbreaks. Carnival in Trinidad, celebrated two days before the season of Lent, is a time of musical (often Calypso) celebration. However, Carnival and Calypso are about much more than music and revelry. They are linked by a multi-layered tradition that encompasses religion, politics, and culture. Ray Funk will talk about the meaning behind the merrymaking. Speaker, Ray Funk. This Sunday: Peace is a value that permeates all Quaker teachings. Friends (Quakers) are challenged to be peace educators, to live the value of peace every day at work and at home. In order to reach these goals — and make “peace” more than an expedient slogan — Quakers must continually reinterpret and reevaluate themselves in a changing world. Charley Basham will talk about the Quaker Peace Testimony, an expression of that nonviolent faith and a tradition which goes back over 400 years. Speaker, Charley Basham. Lay Leader, Barbara Braley.
