Please join us for a fall Work Party – Saturday, September 4, from 1 – 5 pm! This is all part of the Green Sanctuary project list that you reviewed and supported last February and March. These projects will create better outdoor spaces for the fellowship to enjoy:

STAIRS from the Sanctuary landing down to the parking area and play yard

3 TERRACES below the west window for perennials;

RECYCLE BIN to collect our recyclables;

WALKWAY to the labyrinth from the driveway;

TREE, SHRUB, & FLOWER bed mulch around plantings

Bring your work gloves, and your good spirit ready to work and have fun working together! The projects with at least 2 or 3 people to help will get done and the rest will have to wait for another season. Come join us if you are around Labor day weekend, we can use all hands to accomplish these jobs and improve our outdoor surroundings!

Be a part of UUFF’s longtime biggest fundraiser! Get to meet other UUs from all around the United States! Whale Coast Alaska will host 32-34 guests this year from July 9-11. We need lodging for 14 singles and 11 couples. (Half of these will arrive a day early and therefore require four nights lodging). This is a great way to support our fellowship. By providing lodging and some meals, UUFF and other UU fellowships in Alaska receive the funds these travelers would otherwise spend in hotels and restaurants during their Alaska visit.

• Sign up to be a host to one or more guests; which includes lodging, a simple breakfast, and some transportation
• Sign up to help with transportation, various times from Thursday evening through Monday morning (often carpooling can be worked out with others staying in your area)
• Help with lunch and dinner on Saturday, July 10
• Help with the canoe trip on July 11 Sunday morning. Canoe to Fellowship! It’s a delightful way to start your morning!

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Your help is needed! Please sign up on the UU Volunteer Bulletin Board or call Marilyn Richardson at 451-6381 or Beth Behner at 474-3946.

And everyone is invited to canoe to Fellowship on Sunday, July 11.

UUFFers have been helping out one day a month at the “Stone Soup Cafe” soup kitchen for several years. The volunteering continues, but the day has changed. We will now be volunteering there on the LAST Thursday of the month instead of the first, because that is a day when they typically have fewer volunteers. The Stone Soup Cafe is located in the basement of the Eagles Hall near the Wendell Street bridge. If you are interested in joining us, come by between 8 a.m. and noon. Most people stay about 2 hours, but any time you can spare is appreciated. If you’re interested in knowing more, talk to Suzanne and Phil Osborn, Peg Bowers, Betty Pixley, or Marilyn Russell. Come join us!

The fellowship needs to have someone step forward and volunteer to be treasurer for the next two year term which begins July 1, 2010. Julia Stewart will not be on the ballot for the next term. In addition both Dana Richter and Julia will be gone April 23 through May 22. It would be nice to get someone started at on the job training for that month!

Kohler, Schmidt and Hutchison prepare the payroll. Erin Atwood does the accounting to keep track of donations and bills paid. The treasurer needs to be able to use an adding machine to keep track of the money in the checking account. He/she should be prepared to help plan the budget and to attend services frequently to help count and deposit the money received in the plate. You don’t have to be a mathematician. It just calls for someone with integrity and dedication. There’ll be lots of support!

If you are interested, speak to Anna or to a board member.

COMMITTEE CHAIR NEEDED FOR UUFF BUILDING & GROUNDS: Anna Plager will step down as Exteriors Committee Chair at the end of December 2009. Several wonderful committee members volunteer time and time again, happy to share in the responsibilities that come with an all-volunteer fellowship like ours. Anna has written a 2-page seasonal guide for the Grounds upkeep and enhancements that the new chair can use or ignore as they wish. Organizing the May though September Yard Parties is a fun way to spend quality time with other UUFF members and friends. Contact Anna or a board member if you are interested.

Green Sanctuary resumes. That’s re-zooms, not reh-zoo-mays, in case you were wondering. With the upcoming world-wide attention on October 24th, 350 Day (see www.350.org), it reminds us that we have no time to waste. The Green Sanctuary Committee will reconvene for their first meeting of the season on Thursday, October 29th, at Gulliver’s Second Story Cafe back room at 11:30 AM. We welcome new, interested planet-lovers to join us for a strategy-storming session on how to kick-off our UUFF efforts this winter. Don’t forget that Thursdays are famed Hungarian mushroom soup days at Gullivers — what more reason do you need to join us.

We have lots of information to work from, including the UUFF member survey and lots of ideas and momentum for worthwhile projects. We even have a fundraising idea. Come join us and add your ideas to the mix – we seek creative energy to help shape our UUFF Green future. We have 4 committee members and would like a couple more to join us. Questions? Contact Susan Grace Stoltz, Suzanne Osborn, Anna Plager, or Laenne Thompson.
