Gilbert & Sullivan On Religion, Magic and Ethics

This Sunday: Gilbert & Sullivan wrote 14 comic operas in Victorian England, which critically satirized many social institutions.  Mr. Slusher will focus upon G&S’s comic critique of religion, magic and ethics and suggest their relevance to today. Speaker: Monte Slusher. Lay Leader: Cam  Leonard.

Who is this minister who stands before you?

This Sunday, we meet Rev. Sarah Schurr who will be a minister in residence at UUFF for the next several weeks. Rev. Schurr says she loves to preach and lead worship. She is a graduate of the theology program at Marylhurst University, where her thesis was “Worship in Our Own Rite: Unitarian Universalist Flower Communion.” After graduating, she was ordained by the UU Fellowship of Corvallis, where she did her internship. She has served on the Pacific Northwest District board of trustees and as a new congregation organizer. She currently works for the district as a consultant and member of the nominating committee. She also works as a social worker at Parkinson‘s Resources of Oregon while she awaits her first parish position.

Atheism

This Sunday: Dale Guthrie will present an alternative natural explanation for the origin of empathy, morality, love and art that differs from the supernatural ones.  Dr. Guthrie is a retired UA professor of biology. He teaches classes on atheism for OLLI (Osher  Lifelong Learning Institute).  In his UU talk he will reflect on Ice Age information and how we compare with other animals.

Humor Sunday

This Sunday: A sense of humor may be essential to the enjoyment of life.  Humor can relieve stress, enhance relationships, and possibly increase energy.  Laughter
is a gift that allows us to keep our hearts light, even at the most difficult of times.  Today several members of the congregation share what tickles their funny bone.  Lay Leader: Larry Fogelson. Accompanist: Vera Alexander.
