The third Friday of the month is movie night at UUFF, originally sponsored by the UU Fellowship of Fairbanks’ Social Action Committee. We look for movies that inform, challenge, and inspire us to action, especially movies that you are unlikely to catch elsewhere. Come enjoy the movie and stay for conversation. All movies are presented in the UUFF sanctuary at 4448 Pikes Landing Rd. Check out the calendar to see what’s scheduled this month.
The Hungry Book Club II meets in members’ homes on the second Friday of the month. Our discussions start with a potluck at 6:00 p.m. There is no official “club” that you have to join. This is more a social gathering than a serious book club so if you haven’t read the book, but would like to get to know folks better, please come. We would love to have you. The Supper Club meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 5:30 pm at a different restaurant for good food and conversation. For reservations, please contact Marilyn (452-4532) by Monday evening. Check out the UUFF calendar to find out the location of the next Supper Club.
We are taught to think of great, larger-than-life figures as the creators of social change. For example, in the popular imagination “the civil rights movement” and “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” are two ways of saying the same thing. In reality, much change flows from multiple small acts, many of them quietly courageous, performed by people un-noted in the history books. Gordon Gibson, our visiting minister, was a participant in the Selma voting rights campaign of 1965 and was the Unitarian Universalist minister in Mississippi 1969-84. He has spent years collecting stories of small acts of great courage. Last summer he witnessed such acts when the church he now belongs to in Knoxville, Tennessee, was attacked by a man with a shotgun. Guest minister, Rev. Gordon Gibson. Lay leader, Michael Bonilla.
